  12. ──────────────────────────── 1. INTRODUCTION ─────────────────────────────────

  15. UDEL (the Ultimate DELete command) will be a component of UTOOLS (the Ultimate
  16. TOOLS) which will contain the following four tools :
  17.  
  18. UCD    Intelligent directory change that works between disks/partitions and
  19.        whitout having to give a complete path.
  20. UCOPY  File and/or directory copy with several selection options. When the des-
  21.        tination disk is a floppy diskette,  UCOPY is able to split files on se-
  22.        veral diskettes if necessary and may restore only designated files.
  23. UDEL   Files/Directories deletion with numerous options (see below). Note that
  24.        without any option, UDEL works like the DEL command.
  25. UDIR   File list with numerous selection options (date, size, type, ...) and
  26.        usable like a more powerful WHERE.

  39. UDEL is distributed as shareware, which means if you've downloaded it from a
  40. bulletin board or obtained it from a friend, you can try it out before you
  41. decide whether you'd like to keep it.  Like all shareware, if you do decide to
  42. keep UDEL, you must pay a registration fee.
  43.  
  44. UDEL is a copyrighted program protected by both international and U.S. copy-
  45. right law.  If you obtained UDEL from an on-line computer service or bulletin
  46. board, a friend or colleague, or another similar source, you have an unregis-
  47. tered (trial) copy.  You are authorized to use this copy without charge for a
  48. limited period of time (One month).  After this time is up, you must register
  49. and pay for UDEL to continue using it.

  51. You may freely give your copy of UDEL but without discarding or modifiing any
  52. of the files in the package which MUST contain :

  65. The registration fee for a single copy of both versions UDEL is $20 (or 120 FF).

  79. Why are these tools modestly called Ultimate Tools ?
  80.  
  81. First, we wanted to call them YADEL (Yet Another DELete command), YADIR, YACOPY
  82. and YACD (As you can see, these names are a little bit less pretentious).
  83. But these names are too long to be efficiently and rapidly typed. And the key-
  84. board layout is not adapted to a fast typing of the three consecutive letters
  85. Y, A and D.
  86. Besides, the name YATOOLS for the complete package didn't suit to us.
  87. That's why, after a long time of reflexion (maybe about 2 seconds), we humbly
  88. decided to call our tools the 'Ultimate' tools, because we did not see so
  89. powerful tools on the freeware or shareware market until now and wa are sure
  90. that it would be impossible to write better tools like these, now. ;-)

  117. ─────────────────────────── 2. HOW TO USE UDEL ? ─────────────────────────────

  120. What is UDEL ?
  121.  
  122. UDEL allow you to select and delete files AND directories across disks or
  123. partitions if desired, all in one command.
  124. Several file specifications are allowed on the same command line.
  125. Several options allow you to select with precision which files to delete.
  126. UDEL may also only list the selected files acting like a more powerful WHERE.
  127.  
  128.                    This command may be EXTREMELY DANGEROUS. As an example, when
  129.  ┌────────────┐    no default option is defined, the command UDEL /R /X \*.*
  130.  │ BE CAREFUL │    deletes ALL the files AND ALL the directories on ALL the
  131.  └────────────┘    mounted disks or partitions without asking for confirmation
  132.                    (incredible, isn't it ? Yes, but fast and efficient ! I hope
  133.                     you have a recent backup)

  135. UDEL Syntax :
  136.  
  137.       UDEL [[-|/<Options>] [<Parameters>] [<File Spec.>] ...] ...
  138.  
  139. Options must allways be preceded by a '-' or '/' sign. Those options that must
  140. not be followed by a parameter may be combined (/ABC, for example).
  141. Some options must be followed by one parameter (date or file name). In that
  142. case, the following parameter in the command line is supposed to be the awaited
  143. parameter.
  144. Most options act like a toggle : If a default option is defined (See UDEL /I),
  145. the same option ine the command line toggles the corresponding default option ;
  146. Each occurence of the option on the command line toggles the previous state of
  147. the option.
  148.  
  149. Note that UDEL without any option acts like the DOS 3.x or 4.x DEL command.

  151. Available options :
  152.  
  153. - *NW* stands for : Feature not available in the Windows version -
  154.  
  155. /?  Help in english or french, depending on the default language
  156. /A  [A]ide (Help in french) (*NW*).
  157. /C  [C]onfirm before each deletion of a file or a directory
  158. /D  Confirm only before each deletion of a [D]irectory
  159. /F  The list of files to be deleted is in the following [F]ile name (*NW*).
  160. /H  [H]elp (Help in english !)
  161. /K  [K]eepDir - Do not delete directories, only files
  162. /I  [I]nstall default options
  163. /L  Only [L]ist files and directories without deleting them
  164. /N  [N]ewer - Delete only files which have been modified since the following
  165.     date (MMDDYY if language is english, DDMMYY if french)
  166. /O  [O]lder - Delete only files which have not been modified since the follo-
  167.     wing date
  168. /P  [P]aginate the list of deleted files (if /L or /V option) (*NW*)
  169. /R  [R]ecursevely delete files in sub-directories of the current or designated
  170.     directory
  171. /S  Delete also [S]pecial files (invisible, system or read-only)
  172. /V  [V]erbose - List all deleted files and directories.
  173. /X  Repeat deletion across [X] all disks or partitions (except for floppies).
  174. /Z  [Z]ero - Rewrite file with zeroes before deletion. This action prevent the
  175.     undelete function of some popular tools like PCTOOLS(tm).
  176. /1  Delete Recursiveley but only from the first [1] level of the current tree
  177.     (see below for more explanations).

  181. ────────────────────────────── 3. EXAMPLES ───────────────────────────────────

  184. Explanations for these examples are given supposing that no default option
  185. is installed with the UDEL /I command.

  188. UDEL *.BAK
  189. Deletes all the .BAK files in the current directory.
  190.  
  191. UDEL /R *.BAK
  192. Deletes all the .BAK files and directories in the current directory and all
  193. sub-directories of the current directory.
  194.  
  195. UDEL /R \*.BAK
  196. Deletes all the .BAK files and directories in the current partition/disk.
  197.  
  198. UDEL /R /X \*.BAK
  199. Deletes all the .BAK files and directories in all directories of all the mounted
  200. disks/partitions.

  202. UDEL /R /X D:\*.BAK
  203. Deletes all the .BAK files and directories in the D: disk/partition (note that
  204. the unit specification D: supersedes the /X option).
  205.  
  206. UDEL -RXL \*.BAK
  207. Lists all the .BAK files in all the mounted disks/partitions without deleting
  208. them (The /X option works only with file specs of the form '\<file spec>'
  209. without any drive spec. or subdirectories).

  211. UDEL -RV -O 072290 *.BAK *.OLD *.SAV
  212. Deletes and lists all the .BAK, .OLD and .SAV files in the current directory
  213. and in all the sub-directories if they don't have been modified since 07/22/90
  214.  
  215. UDEL /RV \*.BAK /R \*.OLD /RV \*.SAV
  216. 1. Deletes and lists all the .BAK files in the current disk/partition
  217. 2. Deletes and lists all the .OLD files in the root directory of the current
  218.    disk/partition (note that the second /R option toggles the first one)
  219. 3. Deletes and does not list all the .SAV files in the current disk/partition
  220.    (note that the third /R option toggles the second one and the second /V
  221.    option toggle the first one)

  223. UDEL -RV -F LIST.DEL
  224. Recursively deletes and lists all the files and directories which specifications
  225. are founded in the text file LIST.DEL (This file must be a text file with only
  226. one file specification on each line).

  229. IMPORTANT NOTE :
  230. --------------
  231.  
  232. With the /R option, if \AAA\BBB and \AAA\CCC\BBB subdirectories are present in
  233. the current drive (same BBB name, but not at the same level in the tree), the
  234. following commands :
  235.  
  236.     'UDEL /R \AAA\BBB' or
  237.     'UDEL /R BBB' if the current directory is \AAA
  238.  
  239. will delete both BBB subdirectories in the tree because all subdirectories of
  240. AAA will be scanned, not only the \AAA\BBB one.
  241. This may be annoying if not wanted.
  242.  
  243. The /1 option (which works with the /R option) tells UDEL to scan only from
  244. the first level of subdirectories.
  245.  
  246. The command :
  247.  
  248.     'UDEL /R /1 \AAA\BBB'
  249.  
  250. will destroy the complete sub-tree under \AAA\BBB (BBB included), but NOT other
  251. BBB subdirectories.

  254. ─────────────────────────── 4. DEFAULT OPTIONS ───────────────────────────────

  257. The UDEL /I command allow you to define some default options, that is to say
  258. options it is not necessary to repeat in the UDEL command line each time you
  259. use it.
  260. These default options are saved in the UDEL.CFG file which is in the same
  261. directory as UDEL.EXE.
  262.  
  263. Available default options are :
  264.  
  265. /R  Recursive mode
  266. /V  Verbose mode
  267. /C  Confirm each file/directory deletion
  268. /D  Confirm only each directory deletion
  269. /K  Do not delete directories, only files
  270. /Z  Rewrite files with zeroes before deleting
  271. /S  Delete invisible and read-only files
  272. /X  Delete across mounted disks/partitions
  273. /P  Paginate list of deleted files/directories (if /V or /L option)
  274. /L  Only list files without deletion
  275. /1  Delete recursively from the first level only
  276.  
  277. Besides, it is possible to indicate which language to use for UDEL messages and
  278. UDEL help (english or french - sorry, the english version is not a very good
  279. one and there is no german or spanish version available !) and which default
  280. answer must UDEL propose in case of confirmation.

  283. When default options are installed, you must NOT repeat them on the command line
  284. (remember that an option toggles the state of the last same option). In fact,
  285. you must use the option if you do want to toggle it.
  286.  
  287. In verbose mode, default options are repeted embedded in '[]' characters on the
  288. first line of the screen.

  290. Example :
  291. IF the /L option is a default one, if you really want to delete a file, you
  292. must use a UDEL /L command to toggle the /L default option.

  295. ───────────────────────────── 5. UDEL LIMITS ─────────────────────────────────

  298. UDEL is NOT able to delete read-only directories.
  299. "But what can be the use of such a read-only directory ?" could you say.
  300. An example of such a directory is the protection directory of Excel 2.x (in the
  301. french version). This directory is also invisible. No one has to create a
  302. file in this directory, only Excel has to control that this directory exists
  303. and is invisible and is read-only.
